Importance of pelvic alignment:
In addition, when the pelvis is in misalignment it can reduce the amount of room available as the baby develops and not widen as efficiently as it should during labor.
The muscles of the pelvis also play an important role in the birthing process. If muscles of the pelvis are tight and/or tender, this can prevent the pelvis from widening as much as it should and make labor more difficult and painful. If this occurs as birth approaches it can slow down labor, and increase stress to both mother and baby.
The head may be slightly tilted to one side or even present in the posterior position. It is known that a posterior baby (a baby head down and facing forwards rather than face towards the mother's spine) creates the most painful labor conditions. It is also known that a breech baby (a baby positioned foot or buttock first instead of head first) is much more difficult to deliver, often resulting in a Cesarean.
Many women have been told that their babies were too big, or labor “just slowed down” when it was really the position of the baby interfering with the progression of labor. For this reason medical interventions that could have been avoided are carried out, turning a natural process into an operative one. Doctors of Chiropractic work specifically with your pelvis throughout pregnancy restoring a state of balance and creating an environment for an easier, safer delivery.
Avoiding Dystocia
Dystocia is defined as an abnormal or difficult childbirth or labor. In addition to the pain and exhaustion caused by long, difficult labors, dystocia leads to multiple, medical intervention that are physically and emotionally traumatic to both mom and baby. Some of these interventions include the administering of pitocin, epidurals, episiotomies, vacuum extraction, forceps and even Cesarean.
Each of these procedures carry risk of injury to you, your baby or both!
Reported causes for dystocia are pelvic imbalance and its resulting effects on your uterus and your baby's position. However, all of these procedures can be avoided if you prepare for delivery to go more smoothly to begin with.
Continuous Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can restore balance to your pelvis and therefore leads to safer and easier deliveries. |
